Human food can make great treats and meal additions to your pup’s usual diet to provide nutritional boosts and a bit of variety. As you are exploring human food for your pup, keep in mind that any additions to your dog’s meals shouldn’t comprise more than a quarter of your dog’s weekly calories. Pumpkin – Pumpkin is a great source of fiber and beta carotene. Both raw and cooked pumpkin is safe for dogs. Try experimenting with canned pumpkin puree, mixing it right into your dog’s food, to help with digestive regularity.

Green Beans – These are nutritious and low in calories which make it a great source of iron and vitamins. They are an excellent source of plant fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C and manganese. When giving to your pup, make sure you still with only fresh ones or canned ones with no added salt. If your dog tends to gain wait, try replacing some of its regular meal with a can of green beans that typically average no more than 50 calories per can.

Eggs – A great source of very digestible protein that is low in calories. Keep servings to a few each week and stick to cooked eggs over raw. Start out with boiled eggs and cut them up for feeding.

Apples – Apples are a great source of fiber, vitamin A and C. Before feeding, make sure to remove any seeds (which can be toxic for dogs) and the core. Cut the apple up into slices or feed in large chunks. They also have the added benefit of cleaning your pup’s teeth and freshening his breath.

Salmon – This is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids which will help keep your pup’s coat shiny and healthy as well as support their immune system. Try out feeding your dog cooked salmon, or salmon oil into his food bowel.
